Global Engagement Initiative

With the support from USAID and other foundations and private sector contributions, Half the Sky Movement Global Engagement Initiative in India and Kenya is a transmedia development alliance seeking to promote gender equality. This cutting-edge initiative seeks to disseminate Half the Sky Movement’s messages and associated transmedia tools on a national scale, conduct targeted outreach and educational sessions at the community level, and build the capacity of in-country partners to use innovative media effectively in their efforts. More specifically, programmatic objectives include:

Improve public dialogue on key gender-related concerns at a national scale

Develop the capacity of partner NGOs to sustain Half the Sky Movement transmedia, extend learning, and inspire new and innovative uses of media and technology to achieve gender equality

Foster transformational attitudinal and behavioral changes, shifting the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of target audiences and community norms where NGOs have gender-improving interventions

Nurture policy changes by encouraging global policymakers, business leaders, and influencers to advocate for institutional changes to support gender equality.

Transmedia Tools

Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide is a four-hour documentary broadcast in Kenya and India. The documentary introduces women and girls who are living under some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable — and fighting bravely to change them.

Mobile Games
Three mobile games are being used at the community levels to engage audiences on a fun, interactive, and highly accessible platform.


9 Minutes

Women and girls play out the adventure of pregnancy in a game that rewards them for keeping both mother-to-be and the baby inside her healthy and happy. Players will learn the principles of managing a healthy and successful pregnancy, compressing the nine-month process into a short and compelling game experience.

Worm Attack!

Aimed at children 7 and older, players are tasked with keeping a growing number of boys and girls healthy by defeating the worms inside their tummies. They will gain awareness of the dangers of intestinal worms and learn about the simple de-worming solution that has had an incredible impact on children's health and education.

Family Values

A fun and interactive "soap opera" with dramatic elements, Family Values is based on the narrative choices of “Choose Your Own Adventure” games. The interaction will enhance the perception of a girl's value to a family, with an emphasis on extending girls’ education, as opposed to child labor or early marriage.

Facebook Game
An online social experience that turns gameplay into real-world activism. The digital quest seeks to have players keep women and girls safe, urge real-world actions and micro-donations, and support capacity development of Half the Sky Movement’s nongovernmental organization (NGO) network and partners.
